Earth Day Heros!

You gotta LOVE being a Super Hero for the day.
These are our wild and crazy "Earth Day Super Hero's".
They managed to recycle all of the garbage outside, make bird feeders using pine cones and made an art project using recycled items.
So much fun!

Seeing the Dentist

We had so much fun visiting Dr. Wiley's office for a field trip. The kids were excited to explore the dentist office and touch and feel and examine all of the tools that a dentist uses.
Getting into the real "ins" and "outs" of dentistry!
Dr. Wiley working on a patient.
Dr. E in the house!
Dr. S in the house!
Loving on his Daddy/Dentist.
Thank Dr. Wiley for taking time out of your busy day to let us come and explore the dentist office! We learned so much and had such a great time!

Cheetahs

Our African animal that we studied today was the Cheetah. My goodness the kids' faces lit up when they heard that we'd be making Cheetah masks and that they'd actually get to take them home (as I have been hoarding all of their other African projects for our upcoming Safari). The kids had a ball making their "Own" cheetah masks. I told them that they could color them however they wanted, just as long as they had spots on them. This group of kids sure LOVE to use all kinds of color on their projects. Take a peek. We had quite the fierce group of Cheetahs today.
We are having so much fun learning about Africa and all of their amazing animals.
Oh, also ask you child to sing the Hello song in Swahili. They know it. And it's way too cute.

Celebrating Dr. Seuss

At Shining Stars we can't ever pass up March 2nd without celebrating Dr. Seuss' Birthday. So in honor of him, and also since it has become a "National Day for Reading" we dove into Dr. Seuss' books and enjoyed becoming "The Cat in the Hat."
We had a small class this day (as it seemed to be the week of sickness). But the few kids that were at school had fun making their own Cat in the Hat hats and reading many of our favorite Dr. Seuss books that were brought in from home.

JELLY BEAN MATH

Okay, so maybe Math isn't everybody's most favorite subject. I can understand that. So here at school we try to jazz up our learning a bit from time to time. This week it was learning math the fun way, counting jelly beans. And then of course eating them. I tell ya, if I had learned math this way, I may have ended up liking it so much more.

GUNG HAY FAT CHOY

Happy Chinese New Year
Well we rang in the Chinese New Year with Chinese hats, Chinese Lanterns, Chopsticks and Delicious Chinese Food!

We started off with having each child wear RED. As red is a symbol of "Good Luck and Prosperity".

We then had the children make their Chinese Dragons. The Dragon brings wisdom, wealth and happiness into the new year.

We then had the children make lanterns. In China this symbolizes brightness, happiness, and reunion.

We read many stories about the Chinese New Year and learned that 2011 is the year of the RABBIT. But we also found out that those who were born in 2005 were born in the year of the Rooster, and those who were born in the year 2006 were born in the year of the Dog.

We had the best feast of Chinese food and finished up our day by opening and reading our fortunes from our fortune cookies. All-in-all it was a great celebratory day.
(***side note: I apologize to a few who I didn't have many pictures of. My camera had issues and many pictures didn't turn out. So Sorry!)
